TMJ: Questions and Answers

Temporomandibular joint disorders are highly damaging bite disorders. They are often caused by stress or pressure to the joints that aid in biting and chewing. As a result, patients with TMJ disorders can experience pain in the jaw joints and facial muscles.  Dr. Ratti Handa offers TMJ treatment in Acton, MA. She takes a comprehensive approach to diagnose her patients. Dr. Handa practices airway dentistry, which means that she takes structural problems into account when diagnosing TMJ disorders. Crooked teeth, a narrow palate, and even chronic mouth breathing can contribute to TMD.

How do I know if I have a TMJ disorder?

There are several common signs of TMJ disorders, including:

  • Teeth clenching and grinding
  • Pain when biting and chewing
  • Jaw locking and popping
  • Facial pain
  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Jaw pain and tenderness

Please contact Dr. Handa if you have any of these symptoms. She will examine your mouth and TMJ joints to determine the right treatment for your specific needs.

What triggers TMJ symptoms?

Stress, hard and chewy foods, and caffeine are common triggers for TMD. Patients who are under stress are more likely to clench or grind their teeth. Foods that are harder to eat can also wear down the teeth and jaw joints. Trying to bite and chew harder foods puts additional stress and pressure on the facial muscles. Caffeine affects the nervous system and can also contribute to stress and tense muscles.

What does oral appliance therapy do for TMJ patients?

Oral appliances, similar to mouthguards, are custom-made using impressions of patients’ teeth. When worn at night, oral appliances keep patients from clenching and grinding their teeth. Oral appliances also help correct the position of the jaw.
